When it comes to challenging tow terrain, San Francisco is close to the top of the list, with its narrow, congested streets and impossibly steep hills. But the crew at Ted & Al's Towing slip through the city's crazy-quilt network of avenues and alleyways like fish in a stream, expertly maneuvering into the tiniest of spaces to extricate customers' vehicles.

Despite the challenges of operating a tow service in a hilly city full of one-way streets and unexpected dead-ends, owner Larry Nasey and tow manager Ralph Hoover are committed to providing stellar service and have a history of continually raising the bar. "If the requested goal is to be at a vehicle in 30 minutes, we say, 'Let's do it in 20 minutes,"' Nasey explains.

All Ted & Al's drivers complete a top-notch training program, where they learn to navigate San Francisco's neighborhoods the "Ted & Al's Way." Because the shop gets plenty of calls from stranded tourists who aren't even sure where they are, tow drivers are expected to memorize not only streets, but also visual landmarks.

The drivers are also coached on effective communication and teamwork, cornerstones of the Ted & Al's philosophy. Drivers know they can turn to tow manager Hoover for help solving work-related problems as well as support when personal challenges pop up. Drivers are also furnished with the latest tools and equipment--including top-of-the-line trucks outfitted with power windows, a stereo, and air-conditioning--and are rewarded financially for their successes. Giving drivers the proper training, equipment, and support has led to a level of customer service that hasn't gone unnoticed. In fact, Ted & Al's recently found itself in the "Top Box" category of member satisfaction with service truck operators.

Behind the scenes, the latest technology helps Ted & Al's drivers respond quickly and appropriately to customer calls. Always staying ahead of the curve, the shop rolled out its own Teletrack digital dispatch system in 1995, before upgrading to the V-BOS system it uses today. Owner Nasey makes a point of visiting trade shows so he can stay abreast of the latest products and developments.

Step into Ted & Al's dispatch facility, in fact, and you might wonder if you're in a space center control room. The facility is equipped with various monitors that simultaneously display CSAA, CHP, shop and Internet screens to help dispatchers quickly identify potential problems. Investing in the latest tools helps Ted & Al's keep service levels high, reaching up to 98.8%, but Nasey says he won't be satisfied until they hit their goal of 100%. As he explains, "Good is no longer good enough-you must be excellent in order to thrive."
